Is North Carolina a gerrymandered state?

Yes. Before 2020, NC had one of the most fairly-drawn maps in the country. But after winning seats in the 2022 midterms, Republicans were able to take advantage of a conservative supreme court that eventually ruled that partisan gerrymandering violated the state constitution. As a result, along with Texas, NC has one of the 2 most extreme congressional maps currently in place. The Brennan Center for Justice details the recent history of this gerrymandering and explains its effects: https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/anatomy-north-carolina-gerrymander#:~:text=Indeed%2C%20the%20Republicans'%20new%20North,most%204%20of%2014%20seats

Is North Carolina getting more Democratic as it grows?

The significant presence of college students, minority voters, and educated professionals in the state would imply a solid Democratic base. However, this is counterbalanced by the influx of retirees to rural areas of North Carolina, like Brunswick and Pender counties. These retirees often lean conservative, giving Republicans an edge over Democratic contenders. WFAE 90.7 provides insights into this trend.

Which North Carolina candidates are prioritizing clean water?

Current Attorney General and Democratic candidate for Governor Josh Stein is highlighting the need to ensure clean water by investing in water infrastructure and rebuilding aging water systems. Click here for details.

Why can't North Carolina propose a referendum to keep women's reproductive rights protected in the state?

Unlike 26 other states, North Carolina's constitution does not allow citizen-initiated referendums. States like Arizona, California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Vermont, and Ohio currently have or have had ballot initiatives, and voters have overwhelmingly voted to amend their state's constitutions to protect women's bodily freedoms. In North Carolina, we must depend on our state representatives to do the right thing for women. Choose your representatives carefully!
